This past weekend, I spent time at a conference exploring the importance of supporting the lymphatic system of the body. You may be asking yourself, “What is the lymphatic system? Why do I care about it?” Well, it’s your other circulatory system, and it plays a very important role in detoxification; it houses your immune system, and it picks up what your cardiovascular system leaves behind!

Live Longer AND Live Well Longer - There is a misconception out there that our health has improved because we are living longer. If you look at the statistics for Canada in 1970 the average lifespan was almost 73 years and as of 2019, that number has risen to 80 years for males and 84 years for females. But the question must be asked, are we living WELL longer?

A Root to Health?
Sitting here watching my daughters snooze on the couch battling a bad bug. One complaining of an upset tummy and the other running a slight fever I am wracking my brain for foods that can support and help them fight this virus. Tis’ the season, the season of colds and flues and I am bound and determined to make it through as unscathed as possible. One of my favorite foods to add to my repertoire is ginger.
The best way to use ginger is from the fresh root but it also comes in a powdered form. If you can buy the root and slice it up, mash it up, grind it you will get the most benefits. There are actually many scientifically proven benefits of this magical (NOTE: the magic has not been scientifically proven.) root. Some of the best include anti-inflammatory gingerol and shaogals which can relieve a sore throat and kill rhinoviruses. Ginger has been used for years to help counteract and upset stomach. One of my favorite uses is muscle aches and pains. I love to boil some ginger root to make a tea and drink it after a long workout. My hubby has used it for his sore back as well!
Do you deal with arthritic-type pains? Ginger has been proven to help alleviate pain associated with arthritis as well. If ginger is eaten regularly it can actually help regain flexibility and possibly help to get back to physical activity. How about PMS? Do you deal with cramping and aches and pains every month? Having ginger can help!
Ginger has anti-microbial, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It can, therefore, help balance the microbiome of the gut as well as the mouth! If you are prone to dental issues like cavities then eating ginger may help kill off some of the bacteria and make your breath smell great!
So, from indigestion, upset stomach to gas and bloating, ginger is a powerhouse. It can help alleviate inflammation and aches and pains. Ginger supports the immune system to help keep viruses and bacteria suppressed. It’s best to consume it on a regular basis so what are the best ways to get this superfood into your diet? Try making a ginger tea by boiling some ginger root and sipping it warm. You can add ginger to bone broth and meat stock and I personally love carrot ginger soup! (Leave a comment below and I will send you the recipe!) It’s great in a fresh juice or in your morning smoothie. Drink it all day infused in water. I have also minced it in salad dressings and my newest addition is golden milk with almond milk and turmeric for an awesome anti-inflammatory elixir.
