Holiday drinks

Drinks Count Too

Many of us stay accountable for the food but forget the drinks add up too! I am astounded at the number of New Year resolution stories I hear that begin with “I just don’t know where I went wrong!” I am by NO means going to tell you NOT to drink during the holiday season. If there is ever a time to make a toast (besides a wedding) it’s for making it through another year! Here’s my tips for drinking (somewhat) healthily during the holidays.

  1.  A great rule of thumb is to drink your first drink, sip your second drink and pass on the third. Just watch out for that “guy” that is continuously walking around filling empty glasses!! Don't be caught unaware of how much you have actually had to drink!
  2.  Another tip is to drink a big glass of water between each cocktail. This not only slows you down, it can help stave off a hangover the next day! We are already increasing our water (see blog post from day one) right? Fool your friends by adding fruit or spiral cut cucumber to a little bubbly water and tell them it's a spritzer! No peer pressure to deal with either!
  3. A reminder from yesterday (see blog post from day two) to choose the events in advance that you are going to indulge. Choose only a few parties to throw caution to the wind and for the rest, use moderation. This will also keep you safe as you can plan for your ride home in advance too!! DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!!
  4. Think about choosing your favorite holiday drink OR choosing your favorite dessert treat but not both!! Some of the drinks that are holiday favorites ARE dessert!!

I’m not a HUGE fan of counting calories but here’s a little breakdown of some Holiday drinks and a healthier choice to help guide you through the holidays. Some of these drinks are equivalent to the calorie count of an entire MEAL! Your choices matter for making through the holidays healthy!
