Are You Making Good Choices?
The Choice is Yours!
Making good choices can be really challenging. Life gets busy, stress levels rise, and the easiest thing to do is to hit the drive-thru or skip the dishes. We have convenience food in abundance around us, and what we don’t even realize is that those foods are adding to our stress and setting us up for illness and more problems down the road. It’s easy to ignore it until disease is staring us in the face, and most people would rather take a pill or go through surgery than to make a lifestyle change. Not to mention, the foods and drinks that keep us coming back again and again have an opioid effect on the brain, so in a sense we are dealing with a type of addiction. So what does it take to get our attention, before we have to try to reverse a major health issue and make a drastic lifestyle change? The great thing is, the choice is yours!
1. The Power of Positive Thinking.
Our mindset is SO powerful, but if we never think about something, we can’t change our minds about it. Listen to some health podcasts, read a book, or watch a documentary to get fired up about healthy eating. If you start to investigate our food system and focus your mind on the detrimental effects of convenience foods, they will begin to lose their appeal. I will list some books and podcasts below to start your list!
2. Make a commitment and stick with it.
So simplistic, but it can be the hardest thing to do. Do a Whole30 month. Join an online program, or just commit to skipping the takeout, junk food, and drive-thru for a month. Plan your meals for the week, shop for them, and make extra for leftovers so you aren’t overwhelmed by the amount of work. Plan your meals ahead, prep your veggies and other quick foods like boiled eggs, and pack your foods to take along. Have things like nuts and seeds, hard boiled eggs, good quality cheese, homemade energy bites, and chopped and washed veggies on hand to grab-and-go. Use the weekend to get some of this ready, and you’ll save time during the busy week.
3. Be easy on yourself.
If you slip up, just acknowledge it, and move on. Don’t let one “cheat” become a whole day or a whole week of cheats. Don’t wait until Monday to start again. Drink a big glass of water, reset your resolve, and listen to one of those podcasts to encourage yourself in the right direction.
