A Thanksgiving Tribute
What should I eat?
As I sit here and write this blog, I am reflecting on all that I have to be thankful for. Today is Canada’s Thanksgiving. A day we spend with family and friends and give thanks for all that we have, all the opportunity, all our possessions, and all our blessings. Along with all, we have let’s give thanks for our food. Most days we take food for granted. It just seems to show up in the grocery store for us to purchase. Have you ever given thought to how incredible it is that we can walk into a grocery store at any time of the year, almost any time of the day and find fresh produce? Baked bread? A cornucopia of deliciousness?
It amazes me the choices we make when it comes to food. With all the plentiful, healthy choices we have right at our fingertips I am astounded to see that the center of most grocery stores is still full of processed food-like products that we buy regularly. These foods don’t serve our health at all, but they taste great, they're convenient and call us back time and again like an itch we just can’t scratch.
On this day of thanks, I would like to ask each and every one of us to take a moment to reflect and re-evaluate the food we eat and the way we purchase it. We have each been given an amazing body to live in. When we feed our body real food that serves us by feeding our brain, supporting our immune function and providing us with calories and nutrients we have energy and vitality to live a fuller life. It is our choice what we put into our mouths. Give thanks every day for the amazing life you have been given by making the best choices we can.
With all the choices we are blessed with, let’s do our best to make choices that serve our health. When we begin to make changes like these, the grocery stores will have to respond. They will have to provide even more healthy foods; they will have to remove processed products from the shelves and bring in real food. This will support our bodies; it will support our farmers and in turn support our environment.
So, this Thanksgiving and every holiday we have coming up, what should we eat? My advice is to go back to the basics. Grandma knew what she was doing! Real foods cooked slowly with love and pride. Visit your farmer’s market, support local farmers, eat foods that are in season and listen to your body. When you are full, stop eating. Remember that the next holiday is just around the corner! There will likely be leftovers so there is no need to stuff yourself! You will have these foods again! Give thanks for your amazing body, your health (both physical and mental) and feed yourself with love and consideration. We only have this one life and this one body so let’s feed ourselves for this amazing adventure called life!
