Time to Spring Clean! Can you do it Toxin Free?

Mindful Spring Cleaning: Refreshing Your Home and Body Naturally

By: Megan Barefoot

I have been looking forward to this time of year for what feels like FOREVER! As the days grow longer and the air becomes warmer, spring offers the perfect opportunity to rejuvenate both our living spaces and our bodies. Many people spring clean the home but what about your own body? This season, why not embrace a mindful approach to cleaning that honors the environment and your well-being? Say goodbye to harsh chemicals and hello to the power of nature with these tips for a holistic spring refresh.

There are benefits to natural cleaning! Traditional cleaning products often contain harmful chemicals that can pose risks to both our health and the environment. By choosing natural alternatives, you not only reduce your exposure to toxins but also minimize your carbon footprint. Natural cleaning products are gentle yet effective, leaving your home sparkling clean without compromising your health or the planet's well-being.

Mindful Cleaning Tips for Your Home:

  1. All-Purpose Cleaner: Create your own all-purpose cleaner by mixing equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Add a few drops of essential oils like lemon, lavender, or tea tree oil for a refreshing scent and added antimicrobial properties. If you are looking to cut grease in the kitchen, using the same cleaner with a little biodegradable dish soap will do the trick!

  2. Surface Scrubber: Baking soda is a versatile and powerful cleaning agent that can tackle tough stains and grime. Sprinkle baking soda onto surfaces like countertops, sinks, and tubs, then scrub with a damp cloth or sponge for a gentle yet effective clean.

  3. Air Purification: Open windows to let in fresh air and sunshine, and consider adding indoor plants like spider plants, peace lilies, or snake plants to naturally purify the air and enhance indoor air quality.

Mindful Cleaning Tips for Your Body:

  1. Natural Body Scrub: This may seem sticky and more like dessert, but if you want to scrub off winter’s dry skin, this is a great and easy scrub! Mix together equal parts coconut oil and sugar or salt to create a luxurious body scrub. Gently massage onto damp skin to exfoliate and moisturize, leaving your skin soft and radiant.

  2. DIY Hair Rinse: Apple cider vinegar makes an excellent natural hair rinse that helps remove product buildup and restore pH balance. Dilute apple cider vinegar with water, pour it over hair after shampooing, and rinse thoroughly for shiny, healthy-looking locks.

  3. Herbal Bath Soak: Treat yourself to a relaxing herbal bath soak by adding dried herbs like lavender, chamomile, or rose petals to a warm bath. I like to use a little tea bag for all my herbs but feel free to add them directly to your water if you don’t mind them going down your drain! Not only will it help soothe sore muscles and relax the mind, but it will also leave your skin feeling nourished and refreshed.

This spring, let's embark on a journey of mindful cleaning that nurtures both our homes and our bodies. By embracing natural products and sustainable practices, we can create spaces that are not only clean and tidy but also safe, healthy, and harmonious with the world around us. Here's to a season of renewal, rejuvenation, and mindful living!
