January Jumpstart – Do you Make New Year’s Resolutions?

By Megan Barefoot

A New Year's resolution is a tradition in which a person makes a promise to themselves to do something better or change something about themselves in the new year. These resolutions are often related to self-improvement such as exercising more eating healthier or quitting a bad habit. Some people make resolutions to achieve specific goals such as learning a new skill or saving money. New Year's resolutions are often made with the intention of starting the new year off on a positive note and setting the tone for the rest of the year.

There are several benefits to making New Year's resolutions. First, they can help you achieve specific goals: By setting a resolution you can identify an area of your life that you want to improve and then work towards achieving that goal. This can give you a sense of accomplishment and motivation to keep going. Second, they can help you make positive changes: Making a resolution to change a negative behavior or adopt a new habit can be a great way to improve your quality of life. For example, if you resolved to exercise more you may feel healthier and more energetic. New Year's resolutions can help you reflect on the past year: Making a resolution is a good opportunity to reflect on your experiences and accomplishments from the past year and think about what you want to do differently in the future. They can also provide a sense of community as many people make resolutions at the same time which can create a sense of community and support as you work towards your goals.

Overall making a New Year's resolution can be a positive and rewarding experience as it gives you the opportunity to set and achieve goals make positive changes in your life and reflect on your past experiences.

While making New Year's resolutions can be a positive there are also some potential drawbacks. First, it can be easy to make unrealistic resolutions: Some people may set unrealistic goals for themselves which can be frustrating and demotivating if they are not achieved. It can also be difficult to stick to resolutions because changing habits or behaviors can be challenging, and it can be easy to fall back into old patterns. This can be discouraging and may make it difficult to stick to your resolution. It can be stressful setting goals and trying to make changes in your life by yourself. It can also be stressful if you're trying to do it all at once! This added stress can be negative for your overall well-being. And finally, it can lead to self-criticism if you don't stick to your resolution or don't see the progress you were hoping for. You may criticize yourself and feel like you have failed and this can be detrimental to your self-esteem and overall well-being. Overall, change is hard and it’s common knowledge that New Year’s resolutions rarely stick!

It's important to remember that making a New Year's resolution is a personal choice and it's OK if you don't stick to it or if you decide to change your resolution mid-year. The important thing is to focus on making positive changes in your life that are realistic and achievable to be kind to yourself along the way.
