Healthy Halloween Swaps Without Giving Up the Fun

A Little Less Sugar, a Lot of Deliciousness, and All the Halloween Fun!

Halloween has a way of bringing a lot of treats into the house. Before you know it, there are bowls of chocolate on the counter, leftover candy from trick-or-treating, and of course, the few “just in case” bags that tend to disappear long before Halloween even arrives. With so many treats around, it’s easy to feel like you need to either resist them or indulge in them. But it doesn’t have to be either-or. The goal is to find a little balance while still enjoying the fun of Halloween.

Whether you’re heading out with the kids or greeting trick-or-treaters at the door, kick off your evening with a satisfying meal that includes protein, fibre and healthy fats. Starting with a balanced meal can help keep your blood sugar steadier and leave you feeling satisfied when the candy comes out, so you can enjoy a few treats without feeling like you need to keep going back for more.

There’s also no need to turn every favourite treat into a “healthy” version. Instead, look for simple swaps that still deliver the flavour, texture, or satisfaction that makes a treat appealing in the first place. When the candy bowl starts getting a little too much attention, having something equally tempting close by can make all the difference. Think apple slices with a homemade caramel dip, popcorn drizzled with dark chocolate or sweet and spicy roasted nuts. A Halloween snack board is another fun idea. Fill it with cheese, nuts and seeds, roasted chickpeas, popcorn, dark chocolate and fruit. It doesn’t need to be Pinterest-perfect. Just have a few delicious options within easy reach when the candy bowl starts calling out to you.

So have fun on Halloween. This doesn’t have to turn into a test of willpower or a competition to replace every traditional treat with a healthy alternative. Start with a balanced meal, choose a few treats that you genuinely enjoy, add some satisfying options alongside them, and enjoy Halloween for what it is – a little fun, a few treats, and a lot of memories.

Caramel Apple Dip

Instead of caramel apples, try apple slices with a creamy, caramel-inspired dip. This Caramel Apple Dip combines Greek yogurt and cream cheese with maple syrup, cinnamon, and Skor bits. The yogurt adds protein while the creamy dip delivers that familiar caramel-and-toffee combination without coating an entire apple in a thick layer of caramel.

Caramel Apple Dip

Makes approximately 1 ½ cups

Ingredients

  • ½ cup plain full-fat Greek yogurt

  • ½ cup cream cheese, softened

  • 2-3 tbsp pure maple syrup

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • ½ tsp cinnamon

  • ¼ tsp sea salt

  • ¼ cup Skor bits, plus extra for the top

  • 1-2 tbsp milk, if needed

Instructions

  1. Whisk the cream cheese until smooth.

  2. Add the Greek yogurt, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon and salt. Beat until creamy and well combined.

  3. Fold in the Skor bits.

  4. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavours to combine.

  5. Stir well before serving and top with additional Skor bits.

  6. Serve with sliced apples and pears.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch Bars

There’s no need to give up the flavours that you love to make a treat a little more nourishing. This homemade Butterfinger-inspired bar combines peanut butter, chocolate, and a crispy centre using simple ingredients so you can enjoy a popular Halloween favourite with your own homemade twist.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch Bars

Makes 12-16 bars

Ingredients

Peanut butter centre

  • 1 cup natural creamy peanut butter, well stirred

  • 1/3 cup pure maple syrup

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • ¼ tsp sea salt

  • 2 cups unsweetened corn flakes

Chocolate coating

1 cup chopped dark chocolate

1 tsp coconut oil

Pinch of sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 300F.

  2. Toast the cornflakes on a large baking tray for 8-10 minutes. Set aside to cool.

  3. Line an 8-inch square pan with parchment paper.

  4. Place the peanut butter, maple syrup and coconut oil in a small saucepan. Warm over low heat, stirring until smooth and well combined. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and salt.

  5. Add the cornflakes to a large bowl and lightly crush. Make sure you leave some larger pieces for crunch. Pour the warm peanut butter mixture over the cornflakes and gently fold until everything is coated.

  6. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan and press firmly into an even layer using the back of a spoon or the bottom of a glass. The firmer the bars, the easier they will be to cut.

  7. Refrigerate for at least an hour or until firm.

  8. When firm, remove the bars and parchment paper from the pan and cut into 12-16 bars.

  9. Melt the chopped chocolate and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl in 20-30 second intervals, stirring between intervals, until smooth.

  10. Dip each bar into the melted chocolate and place on a wire cooling rack. Sprinkle with a tiny pinch of sea salt if desired.

  11. Return the bars to the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes until the chocolate is firm.

  12. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
