Fueling Your Summer Road Trip

Five savvy strategies for healthy eating on the go

Summer Road Trip Tips

By: Megan Barefoot

Summer is the perfect time to hit the road and get out to make memorable adventures with friends and family. However, road trips often involve fast food stops and unhealthy snacking, which can derail your healthy eating habits. But fear not! With a little planning and creativity, you can stay on track with your nutrition goals while enjoying your summer road trip. Here are five tips to help you eat healthy and nourish your body along the way:

1: Plan ahead and pack smart. Before you hit the road, take some time to plan your meals and snacks. Prepare a variety of nutritious options and pack them in a cooler or insulated bag. Include some fresh fruits and vegetables that have been precut and portioned for easy snacking. It's always best to opt for some homemade sandwiches or wraps with your whole grain bread or tortillas. Use some lean protein and plenty of veggies, of course. Also pack some healthy snacks like nuts, seeds, granola bars, or homemade trail mix to keep you energized between meals.

2: Hydration is key. staying hydrated is essential, especially during long hours on the road. Instead of sugary sodas or energy drinks, opt for water as your primary beverage. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it whenever you have a chance. If plain water becomes boring, try infusing it with slices of citrus fruits, cucumbers, or fresh herbs like mint or basil. Herbal teas or unsweetened iced teas are also refreshing alternatives.

3: Seek out local farmers markets. One of the joys of road trips is discovering new places. Take advantage of this by visiting local farmers markets along your route. Farmers markets offer an abundance of fresh, locally sourced produce, often at very reasonable prices. Explore the vibrant array of fruits, vegetables, and even homemade goods. These markets provide an opportunity to try seasonal, nutrient rich foods while supporting local farmers and businesses.

4: Make mindful choices at restaurants. Last week we talked about staying mindful for optimal digestion, and while it's tempting to indulge in fast foods or roadside diners, try to make the effort to find healthier options when dining out. Look for restaurants that prioritize whole, unprocessed ingredients and offer lighter menu choices. It's always great to go for grilled or baked proteins like chicken, fish, or tofu and ask for steam or roasted vegetables as a side dish. Be mindful of portion sizes and consider sharing meals or ordering from the appetizer menu. Don't be afraid to ask for modifications to make your meal healthier; I promise this won't make you high maintenance.

5: Embrace snacking on the go. Snacking is always an important part of a road trip, but it doesn't have to stop your healthy eating habits. Instead of relying on convenience store snacks, pack your own nutrition options. Cut up raw veggies and pair them with hummus or Greek yogurt dip. Air popped popcorn, kale chips, and roasted chickpeas make satisfying and crunchy alternatives to chips. If you have a sweet tooth, pack some dried fruit or dark chocolate squares for a healthier treat.

All summer long, I hope you can get out and be adventurous while maintaining a healthy eating routine. By packing smart, staying hydrated, and seeking out local markets, you can make mindful choices and embrace healthy eating at dinner and for snacks. You can fill your body with nourishing foods and make your trip a health conscious adventure. So buckle up, hit the road, and enjoy your journey while prioritizing your well-being every step of the way!
